Brief History of MacDill Air Force Base
MacDill Air Force Base, formerly Southeast Air Base, Tampa and MacDill Field, was named after Colonel Leslie MacDill, a World War I aviator who commanded St. Jean de Monte, an aerial gunnery school in France and died in a crash in Anacostia, Washington, DC in his North American BC-1 plane. According to MacDill AFB's official website, the base's first mission included "training airmen in the B-17 Flying Fortress and B-26 Marauder aircraft." The United States Strike Command was later headquartered at the base in 1961, which then became a Tactical Air Command Training Base with F-4 and F-16 planes. More recent history places the base as the "strategic center" for several military operations including Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti, Desert Storm, Desert Shield, and Just Cause in Panama.
The schools of the Hillsborough County School system have teamed up with MacDill AFB to provide the highest quality level of education for K-12 students living on base. Students in grades K-5 attend Tinker Elementary School while middle and high school level students attend Monroe Middle School and Robinson High School. Students living off base are also served by the Hillsborough County School District as well as the Pinellas County School District. Additionally, residents have the option of sending their children to a number of area private schools or engage in home schooling as an alternative to public education.
