Located about 4 miles south by southwest from downtown Tampa and about 8 miles from the heart of the city are MacDill Air Force Base and the surrounding communities of Hillsborough County. Today, there are approximately 15,500 military and almost 3,000 civilian personnel assigned to MacDill AFB, with 1,200 active members living on base and about 2,600 members living off base. This does not take in to account the Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, active military dependents and retired military population.
